In short

At B1 you usually write a personal email (du) and a semi-formal email (Sie): in Goethe B1 about 80 and about 40 words, in telc B1 one letter with four guiding points. Each purpose has set phrases: inviting, thanking, apologising, asking, suggesting, complaining. What matters most is that greeting, closing and du or Sie match the recipient.

Example: Goethe B1, part 3 (about 40 words)

Task from the model test: your course teacher, Frau Müller, has invited you to a meeting and you cannot come. Our model answer, 43 words:

Sehr geehrte Frau Müller, vielen Dank für die Einladung. Leider kann ich am Donnerstag nicht kommen, weil ich an diesem Tag arbeiten muss. Das tut mir sehr leid. Wäre es möglich, einen neuen Termin nächste Woche zu vereinbaren? Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Amira Haddad

Three mistakes that cost points

  • Mixing du and Sie: "Sehr geehrte Frau Müller, wie geht es dir?" Stay with one form, including "Ihnen" and "Ihre" (capitalised).
  • A missing point: tick off every point of the task before you write the closing.
  • Phrases without content: one sentence with a reason or example per point shows you solved the task.

How telc B1 marks the letter: telc B1 writing. Word counts for all exams: writing word count A1 to C2. Giving your opinion in the guestbook task: opinion phrases.
