In short

Like doctors, dentists and pharmacists with a foreign degree need a Fachsprachprüfung, based on B2 and oriented at C1. It is run by the state dental chamber or the state pharmacists' chamber, not the medical chamber. Most have three parts of 20 minutes. Fees include 570 euros (dentists, Thüringen), 400 euros (pharmacists, Bayern) and 250 euros (pharmacists, Hamburg).

The Hamburg chamber states clearly what is marked: communication, a structured conversation, vocabulary, fluency and accurate understanding. Pharmaceutical knowledge is not tested; that comes later in the Kenntnisprüfung.

How it differs from the doctors' exam

  • A different chamber: the state dental or pharmacists' chamber, not the medical chamber.
  • Different cases: for dentists, for example, a history form and an X-ray; for pharmacists, advice on a medicine and a side-effect report.
  • Fees are often lower than for doctors (400 to 650 euros there).

What changes on 1 November 2026

The law in the Federal Law Gazette 2026 I No. 225 also covers dentists and pharmacists: for degrees from outside the EU, the Kenntnisprüfung becomes the standard route, and the equivalence check only happens on request. The language exam stays. More in Kenntnisprüfung 2026 for foreign doctors and Defizitbescheid.
