In short

The Sprachbausteine (language elements) in telc Deutsch B2 have two parts of 10 gaps, each worth 1.5 points, so 30 of 300 points. Part 1 mixes grammar and vocabulary. Across our 100 gaps written to the telc model, the most frequent were word choice and fixed phrases (21), adverbs and particles (16), connectors (15) and verbs with prepositions (14).

There is no separate time: reading and language elements share 90 minutes. Unlike B1, part 1 at B2 rarely asks for a bare form such as "bin" or "war"; it asks for the word that fits both meaning and grammar.

Four places where many people lose points

  • Genitive relative pronouns: "die Studentin, deren Arbeit …". Four of the eleven relative pronouns in our sets were "deren".
  • Pronominal adverbs: "Wir hoffen darauf, dass …", "Das trägt dazu bei, …". The preposition belongs to the verb, not to the topic.
  • Adverbs that signal contrast or limitation: allerdings, jedoch, immerhin. They often open the sentence, with the verb straight after.
  • Near-synonym verbs: verwenden or benutzen, sich verändern or verändern. Learning the whole phrase is what helps here.

Part 2: vocabulary from the box

Part 2 is a formal text; in the model test it is a reply to an advert. You have 15 words for 10 gaps, so five are left over. Cross out the words you use and check at the end that the remaining five really fit nowhere.
