In short

The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 has four modules: reading (65 minutes), listening (about 40), writing (75) and speaking (about 20 minutes per pair, plus 20 minutes' preparation). Each module is worth 100 points and is passed with 60. In reading and listening that means 18 of 30 correct answers. Every module counts on its own and can be retaken alone.

What is the Goethe C1 exam format?

C1 is modular: reading, listening and writing are taken as a group, speaking usually in pairs. The written modules take about 180 minutes in total, without breaks. The table shows each part as the Goethe-Institut describes it in its sample test (Modellsatz).

Before speaking you get 20 minutes' preparation on your own. Notes are allowed, other aids are not. In the exam you speak freely and may look at your notes.

How is C1 different from Goethe B2?

  • Reading part 1 has four options instead of three. It tests word combinations, connectors and prepositions, not content.
  • Reading part 4 has a zero option: two of seven statements belong to none of the people. If you assign every statement to someone, you lose points.
  • Longer writing: about 230 and 120 words, and each task asks for four language functions, such as explaining, giving arguments or naming a problem.
  • More speaking preparation: 20 minutes instead of 15.

What is the Goethe C1 pass mark?

Each module has at most 100 points and is passed with 60 (implementation regulations § 6.3). A strong module does not make up for a weak one. In reading and listening every correct task is one point, converted to result points with a fixed table:

Correct tasks (of 30)Result pointsGrade
27 to 3090 to 100sehr gut (very good)
24 to 2680 to 87gut (good)
21 to 2370 to 77befriedigend (satisfactory)
18 to 2060 to 67ausreichend (sufficient)
0 to 170 to 57nicht bestanden (fail)

How are writing and speaking marked?

Two raters score independently against fixed criteria; the average, rounded to whole points, counts. If in writing one score is above and one below 60 and the average is below, a third rater marks it. Only what is on the answer sheet is marked. In speaking, parts 1 and 2 are scored separately and the short warm-up chat does not count. The speaking examiners do not see your written results.

Can I take and retake modules separately?

Yes. Under the Goethe-Institut's examination regulations you can take the modules separately or together and retake them as often as you like. Each passed module gets its own certificate. You get one overall certificate if you pass all four on one date, or on request if you passed all four within one year; § 15 of the regulations sets the exact conditions.

Whether separate module certificates are enough is decided by whoever asks for the proof: employer, authority or university. For university admission, see Which German test for university admission.

How to prepare

  1. Time your reading: 10, 20, 20 and 15 minutes. In part 4, use the zero option on purpose.
  2. Practise listening part 1 without a second play. The podcast runs once; you get 60 seconds for the tasks first.
  3. Plan writing part 1 first: the four language functions as notes, then about 230 words, then the clean copy. 50 minutes is tight.
  4. Rehearse the presentation out loud with 20 minutes' preparation and about 5 minutes of speaking, then answer two follow-up questions.

You can practise all four modules under real timing in the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 practice set. The level below is covered in Goethe B2 exam: pass mark and format.
