In short

In Goethe B2 writing you have 75 minutes for two texts: a forum post of about 150 words (suggested 50 minutes, 60 points) and a message of about 100 words to a manager (25 minutes, 40 points). You pass with 60 points. Cover all four content points in each text: if task 1 misses the task, the module is hard to pass.

What do the two tasks ask?

Task 1: forum postTask 2: message
Situationa topic in an online forum, for example food wastea problem at work or during an internship
Content pointsfour, in a fixed order: for example give your opinion, give reasons, name alternatives, name advantagesfour, in an order you choose: for example describe, ask for understanding, suggest, show understanding

The task for part 1 says exactly what is checked: how precisely the content points are covered, how correct the text is, and how well sentences and paragraphs are linked. Remember an introduction and a conclusion.

A time plan for 75 minutes

Our suggestion, based on the timings in the sample test. On paper, also allow time to copy onto the answer sheet.

Useful phrases for the four content points

Where most points are lost

  1. Forgetting a content point. Tick off all four when you reread at the end.
  2. Writing the message too casually. You write to a manager: "Sehr geehrte Frau …", formal "Sie", polite.
  3. No linking. A string of main clauses costs coherence points. Link with "deshalb", "trotzdem", "außerdem", "während".
  4. Far too short or too long. About 150 and 100 words are guides; texts well below usually cover the points too thinly.

You can write both tasks under real timing in the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 practice set. All four modules are explained in Goethe B2 exam: pass mark and format.
