Goethe B1 exam results: when they arrive and how to check them

How long does it take to get Goethe B1 results?

There is no single worldwide date. The Goethe-Institut's exam rules only say that results are announced by the exam centre where you took the exam, and that an early individual result is not possible (Prüfungsordnung § 13). Each institute sets its own timetable, and many print a fixed result date next to each exam date. We read the official pages of 13 Goethe-Instituts on 10 October 2026:

Two patterns stand out. Partner venues are slower than the institutes themselves: the Goethe-Institut USA gives 2 weeks at its own sites and 6 weeks at external venues. And several institutes sell speed: Budapest and Zagreb offer faster marking for a fee, Belgrade an express result in two working days. If your institute is not in the table, look for a page called "Prüfungsergebnisse" or "Exam results" on its website, or check the result date in your exam schedule.

How do I check my Goethe B1 result online?

If you took the exam at a Goethe-Institut, your result and certificate appear in your Mein Goethe.de account, the same account you used to book. The Goethe-Institut's own quick guide describes these steps:

1. Log in at Mein Goethe.de with the email address you used to register.
2. On the start page, click Prüfungen (exams). Your exam dates are listed there.
3. Until marking is finished, the exam shows "Prüfungsergebnis liegt noch nicht vor", which means "result not available yet". This is normal and says nothing about pass or fail.
4. When the result is ready, the links Prüfungsergebnis (result) and Zertifikat (certificate) appear under the exam.
5. Click Zertifikat to download your digital certificate as a PDF.

If you took the exam with an exam partner rather than at a Goethe-Institut, the partner may use its own system. In that case, ask the centre where you sat the exam. Some institutes, for example Chennai, email the steps for checking the result before the exam day, so keep that email.

Will I get a paper certificate or a digital one?

That depends on the exam centre. Under the exam rules, certificates are issued on paper or digitally, the centre decides which, and you have no right to the other form. A digital certificate is a PDF file. If you want a paper certificate on top of the digital one, the centre may charge an administrative fee. Many institutes now issue digital certificates only: Pune and Chennai since 1 March 2024, Belgrade since 1 January 2025. Employers, universities and authorities can check that a Goethe certificate is genuine at goethe.de/verify.

How do I read my Goethe B1 result?

Each of the four modules (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) is scored out of 100. Your points stand on the front of the certificate, the grade on the back. A module is passed with 60 points or more. You get one certificate for each module you pass, or one overall certificate if you passed all four at the same venue on the same exam date.

Passed some modules and not others? The passed modules count, and you only retake the ones you failed. Later certificates can be combined with earlier ones, and on request a centre can issue an overall certificate with your best results from within one year (across Goethe-Instituts inside the EU, within one country elsewhere, and at the same centre for Goethe-Zentren and exam partners). I failed a module. What now?

• Ask for a confirmation of participation. If you fail, the centre confirms on request that you took part, with your points. Useful if you need to show progress.
• Check the retake dates. The centre tells you the conditions for a retake together with your result. Modules can be retaken as often as the centre has places.
• Appeal only with a reason. You can appeal within two weeks of receiving your result, in writing, to the head of the exam centre. Simply saying you did not reach a certain score is not enough; the decision on the marking is final.
• Look at your marked answers. Within three months you can ask to see your answers and how they were marked. The tasks and model answers are not shown.

My name or date of birth is wrong on the certificate

Tell the exam centre immediately after you receive the certificate. Against a valid ID document it issues a new certificate with the corrected details, and the faulty one becomes invalid; paper certificates must be handed back. The centre may charge up to 25 percent of the exam fee. Better still, check the spelling of your name in the booking, because the details you enter there are printed on the certificate. If you lose a certificate, the centre where you registered can issue a replacement for a fee, within 10 years.

Can I get a Goethe certificate faster, or without the exam?

Faster: only through the official express or fast-track options some institutes sell. Without the exam: no. Searches for Goethe results are full of offers to "buy" a Goethe B1 certificate. Under the exam rules, certificates found to be forged are invalid, anyone offering payments or gifts to obtain a certificate is excluded, and a certificate issued after such a case can be taken back. Every real certificate can be checked at goethe.de/verify, so a bought one fails at the first employer or embassy that checks.
