In short

Almost every German exam from B1 up asks for your opinion: in Goethe B1 in a guestbook post (about 80 words) and in the presentation, from B2 in the forum post and the discussion. At B1, "Ich finde, dass …" and "Meiner Meinung nach …" are enough. B2 adds "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass …" and weighing up; C1 adds "Meines Erachtens …" and hedges such as "Das mag zutreffen, allerdings …".

Three mistakes that cost points

  • Word order after "Meiner Meinung nach": the verb comes straight away: "Meiner Meinung nach ist das sinnvoll." Wrong: "Meiner Meinung nach, das ist sinnvoll."
  • An opinion without a reason: "Ich finde das gut." alone is too little. Always add a reason or an example.
  • The same phrase every time: saying "Ich finde" five times shows little range. Rotate two or three forms.
