In short

In a B1 exam you do not hear every recording twice. In telc B1, part 1 plays once, parts 2 and 3 twice. In Goethe B1, parts 1 and 4 play twice, parts 2 and 3 only once. In the DTZ every text plays once. For recordings you hear once, the reading time before them decides: read the tasks and mark key words.

Which recordings play once, which twice?

We measured the official practice test recordings of telc, the Goethe-Institut and the DTZ second by second. The table shows how often each part plays and how much time you get to read first.

Exam and partWhat you hearHow oftenReading time first
telc B1, part 1five short opinionsonce30 seconds for all tasks
telc B1, part 2a longer conversation or interviewtwice60 seconds; another 60 between the two plays

Source: our measurement of the recordings for the telc Deutsch B1 practice test, the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 sample test and the DTZ practice test. The instructions on the recordings state the same number of plays.

The instruction on the recording tells you how often a text plays, for example "Sie hören diese Texte nur einmal" (you hear these texts only once) or "Sie hören das Gespräch zweimal" (you hear the conversation twice). Listen for that sentence; it decides your strategy.

Why do some recordings play only once?

Recordings heard once test whether you catch the main point the first time, as in real life with an announcement or a conversation. Their tasks therefore usually ask for the main message or one clear detail, not every word. Recordings heard twice are often longer and ask more precisely.

How to score on recordings you hear once

  1. Use all the reading time. Read every task and mark one or two key words: who, when, where, what is the problem.
  2. Expect synonyms. The recording rarely uses the word from the task. If the task says "verschoben" (postponed), you may hear "findet erst nächste Woche statt" (only takes place next week).
  3. Tick while you listen. Do not wait for the end; there is no second play to check.
  4. Let a missed task go. Tick your best guess and listen for the next one. A blank answer certainly earns nothing.
  5. Listen for turning points: "aber", "eigentlich", "doch nicht". That is where speakers often change their mind, and where the tasks aim.

And recordings that play twice?

Use the first play for the main points and tick what is certain. In the second play, check only the open and doubtful tasks. In telc B1 part 2 you have 60 seconds between the plays; use them to reread the tasks you are not yet sure about.

How to practise

Practise the once-only parts without pausing and without replaying, exactly as in the exam. If you rewind at home, you train for a situation the exam never gives you. In our practice sets the recordings run as in the real exam: telc German B1, Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and DTZ. For the whole Goethe exam, see Goethe B1 pass mark.

Frequently asked questions

Do you hear everything twice in the telc B1 exam?

No. Part 1 with five short opinions plays only once; parts 2 and 3 play twice.

Which Goethe B1 listening parts play only once?

Part 2, a talk, and part 3, a conversation. Part 1 and the discussion in part 4 play twice.

How often are the texts played in the DTZ?

Each text once, in all four parts.

How much time do you get to read the listening tasks?

It depends on the part: 30 seconds in telc B1 part 1, 60 seconds each in Goethe B1 parts 2 to 4, about 10 seconds per text in the DTZ.

What if I miss an answer while listening?

Tick your best guess and focus on the next task. Wrong answers cost no extra points.
